🏈 1990 Two Touch Season Recap
The 1990 Two Touch season stands as one of the earliest structured campaigns in the grassroots era of British American football, showcasing emerging teams from across the UK. It was a year of dominant forces, underdog efforts, and fierce regional rivalries that laid the groundwork for future competition.
🗺️ Regular Season Highlights
The season was split across four regional conferences: South West, Midlands, Anglian, and Southern, each displaying varying levels of dominance and development.
South West Conference
Eastleigh Royals were the clear powerhouse of the South West, boasting an unbeaten record with emphatic wins, including a 32–0 demolition of Bournemouth and a clinical 12–0 victory over Basingstoke. Bournemouth Raiders struggled to keep pace, despite narrow wins over Oxford. Basingstoke Ironsides remained competitive, notably drawing 0–0 with Bournemouth in a tightly contested encounter. Oxford, unfortunately, failed to register a win on the season.
Midlands Conference
Newark Vulcans emerged as the dominant force in the Midlands, notching commanding wins over Birmingham and Tamworth, including a 31–6 dismantling of the latter. Birmingham Raiders and Walsall Titans traded results throughout the season, while Tamworth Trojans played spoiler with a late-season 3–0 upset over Newark. Conway Valley endured a tough campaign, suffering several heavy defeats.
Anglian Conference
Newmarket Mustangs proved themselves a cut above the rest in the Anglian Conference. They cruised through the division, racking up multiple victories over Tiptree Titans—including a 59–0 rout—and picking off Cambridge and Crawley without conceding a point. Their 14–13 victory over Southern powerhouse Berkshire Knights would prove prophetic.
Southern Conference
The Southern Conference was a three-way dogfight between Berkshire Knights, Waldron Warriors, and Heathrow Jets. Berkshire emerged atop with a perfect 8–0 record, dispatching Waldron twice and sweeping Crawley. Waldron’s impressive 48–12 win over Tiptree and 22–13 victory over Crawley showed their scoring flair. Crawley Raiders, while competitive, were unable to match the top-tier firepower.
